The Green Bay Packers history is more extensive than most NFL teams. They are the 3rd oldest NFL franchise, having been established in 1919. They are now a part of the NFC North Division, even though they started out as an independent football team and joined the NFL until 1921. Throughout Green Bay Packers history, they had many division changes, they started in the National Conference, then moved to the Western Conference in 1953, and then were divided into the Central Division of the Western Conference until 1969 when the AFL-NFL merger changed the leagues. Finally, in 2002, they were sent to the North Division as a part of the NFL changing teams around and re-doing divisions.
A unique aspect of the Green Bay Packers history is how the team ownership was structured. Packers are the only community owned, non-profit NFL team. The Green Bay Packers rosters over time have had a long and interesting list of Pro Bowlers. It is not surprising considering their great recruiting and extensive history in the league. Since the Packer's inception in 1919, over 200 various players have received an invite to the Pro Bowl. In the 1960’s, the Lombardi era, the Packer's had a proportionally high number of Pro Bowlers, a credit to the head coach at the time. Looking back at the Green Bay Packers roster in the 1960’s, players had over combined over 50 Pro Bowls appearances. In addition to all the Pro Bowlers, many great Green Bay Packers players from the 1960’s were also inducted into the Hall of Fame. The total Hall of Famers for the time period was eleven, including Coach Vince Lombardi. Lombardi built a powerhouse team and the rewards for the players included countless Pro Bowl appearances, Hall of Fames, and of course, Championships.
