Many great players in the Cleveland Browns roster as we look back in their history; this article discusses three of them. Check back with us in the future, eventually we’ll discuss other notable Browns players and their accomplishments. Our short, but prestigious list includes
Otto Graham (1946), Jim Brown (1957), and
Lou Groza (1946). Let’s start with Lou Groza, whose football career revolved entirely around the Cleveland Browns. Groza played for the Browns from 1946 through 1967. Lou had unique football talent that involved both kicking and blocking. He was a kicker and an offensive tackle for the Browns, although his function as kicker was his main responsibility in his later years with the Browns. Lou Groza a 9 time Pro Bowler was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 1974. Jim Brown started in Cleveland in 1957 where is career continued until 1965, making 8 years in the NFL and with the Browns. Jim Brown rushing yards were over 12,000 in his career, along with exceeding 100 touchdowns over his career. He didn’t miss a Pro Bowl during his career, won Pro Bowl MVP twice and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971. Another Hall of Famer, Lou Groza has a significant role in Cleveland Browns history. Lou remarkably played for the Browns from 1946 to 1967, a 21 year career with the Browns. Lou started his career as offensive tackle and was invited to nine Pro-Bowls out of his ten year career as an offensive lineman. In 1959, Lou had a brief retirement, but quickly decided to return to his passion, the game of football. Lou returned to the Cleveland Browns as their kicker. Besides being named All-NFL tackle six exclusive years, Lou also led the NFL in field goals in 1950, 1952, 1953, 1954 and 1957. In 1992, The Palm County Sports Commission established the Lou Groza award for the best NCAA division one Kicker of the year.
