- Notable Players
- Vikings great players include Fran Tarkenton, Mick Tinglehoff, Jim Marshall, Korey Stringer, Cris Carter and Alan Page. Fran Tarkenton played for the Vikings between 1961 and 1978. During Tarkenton's career, he produced over 33,000 passing yards, that combined with his other statistics made him one the most accomplished Vikings player. Mick Tinglehoff was considered one of the toughest Centers of his time. Mick played for the Vikings between 1962 to 1978, a 17 year career of doing an exceptional job of fending off nose guards and linebackers. Jim Marshall started around the same time as Mick, although Jim was on Defense. Jim played with the Vikings for 19 years and had one year with the Browns making a 20 year NFL career. Jim was renown for his fumble recoveries, with 29 in his career. Korey Stringer, a Pro-Bowler, played for the Vikings his entire NFL career between 1995 and 2000 as an Offensive Tackle. Cris Carter played for the Vikings between 1990 and 2001, holding the record for most receptions with over 1000. Carter achieved 110 touchdowns and over 12,000 total yards in his career. Cris Carter played in 8 Pro -Bowls and was a 4 time all pro. Considering his achievements, former Viking Alan Page might not get the recognition he deserves. Alan Cedric Page was a Viking from 1967 to 1978 and then went to the Bears for the remainder of his NFL career. Page was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1988. This was a result of his great defensive statistics, which included an average 3.4 yards per carry against him. He was named NFL defensive player of the year in 1971 and 1973; was All-Pro 6 times and voted to 9 different Pro-Bowls. In addition to those honors already listed, Alan Page was named NFL's MVP in 1986, only three other defensive players in history have won this award (up to the date of this article). As an interesting side note, Alan was the first NFL player to finish a marathon. His career following the NFL was on the bench, the distinguished bench related to the state Surpreme Court. Alan's law school education catapulted his post football career to eventually become associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court.
