New York Jets History
Notable Players
Throughout New York Jets history, many Pro Bowl players made a name for themselves. As you can imagine, the offensive lineman receive the least amount of credit on the football team. With that being said, we will discuss several Pro Bowlers that battled each game, protecting the offensive back field.
Winston Hill played for the Jets from 1963 to 1976 and finished his career with the Rams for one year. His 14 year career included 8 Pro Bowls. He was renowned for opening enormous holes in the defensive line for the Jets favorite running back of the day. Not too many players on the New York Jets roster could claim to be a high school tennis champion, but Winston Hill could. Another great offensive lineman was
Kevin Mawae, played 16 years in the NFL as offensive center. Even though Kevin played only half of his NFL career with the Jets, those years was very productive. Kevin Mawae was sent to Pro Bowl 7 times and 6 of those games were played when he was with the Jets. Mawae played a significant role New York Jets history helping Curtis Martin rush for over 1,200 yards in one season. He also had a 177 continuous game streak that ended by a shoulder injury. The last offensive lineman we will discuss in this article is
Marvin Powell, a 5 time Pro Bowler. Marvin played offensive tackle and his career extended from 1977 to 1987, although he was with Tampa Bay for two of those years in 86’ and 87’. Two interesting facts about Marvin Powell related to his off the field contributions. Similar to Mawae, he was also elected to be president of the players’ union, prior to Mawae in 1986. In addition, Marvin Powell has a son that played in the NFL with the Denver Broncos in 1999. New York Jets history has had some great players, both on offensive and defense.
Hill, Mawae and Powell combined careers have over 30 impressive years with the Jets.
